Platform Background & Leadership
BitMEX was founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed. Pioneered perpetual swap contracts. Operated by HDR Global Trading Limited (Seychelles). Once the dominant derivatives exchange, now significantly diminished, listing only 17 markets with minimal spot volume (Wikipedia: Arthur Hayes).
Security Track Record
Never directly hacked. The story is regulatory: in October 2020, the DOJ charged Hayes and co-founders with violating the Bank Secrecy Act. BitMEX operated without AML/KYC programs from 2014 to 2020, failed to file suspicious activity reports and knowingly served US customers. The CFTC fined BitMEX $100 million (CoinDesk: BitMEX Guilty Plea). Hayes received six months home confinement, $10 million fine. In March 2025, Trump pardoned Hayes and co-founders.
With 3 verified reviews, BitMEX currently holds an OG Score of 27.69. No user funds were ever lost, but years of deliberate regulatory non-compliance tell their own story. The exchange has since implemented KYC/AML, but the reputational damage is permanent in terms of market position.
BitMEX Fees & Fee Structure
Spot: 0.05% maker, 0.05% taker. Derivatives: 0.05% maker (rebate), 0.05% taker. The negative maker fee was a pioneering feature. Competitive for derivatives, but with only 17 markets and thin liquidity, practical appeal is limited.
Staking & Earn Products
Minimal. A prediction markets feature exists but adoption is negligible. BitMEX remains derivatives-focused.
Trading Experience & Platform Features
Professional derivatives interface: perpetual swaps, traditional futures, quanto contracts. Engine is stable. But BitMEX is a shadow of its former self, overtaken by Binance, Bybit, OKX and Bitget. Relevant primarily as a historical innovator rather than a competitive venue in 2026.
