Gemini has one of the stronger regulatory reputations among older exchanges, but that doesn't mean the platform is free of serious risk. The Gemini Earn collapse is still the biggest stain on its record. Around $900M of customer assets became trapped through Genesis, turning what looked like a yield product into a years-long legal and recovery process. Gemini ultimately distributed assets to affected users, but the episode showed the risks of relying on third-party lending partners.
There are also signs of strategic contraction. Pulling back from markets such as the UK, EU and Australia reduces operating exposure, but it also shows how difficult it has become for Gemini to compete globally under increasingly expensive regulatory requirements.
Another concern is competitiveness. Gemini's retail fees are relatively high, while competitors offer deeper liquidity and cheaper active-trading products. That can make it harder to maintain market share as crypto trading becomes increasingly commoditized.

Gemini built a vault worth bragging about: captive insurance, government-grade cold storage, and more than a decade without a recorded breach. Then it allowed its customer support to earn a BBB F rating. Instant buys can cost more than 5% once fees stack, withdrawals can be delayed for days when users need access most, and support is largely limited to a ticket queue. Meanwhile, the stock that was meant to validate the model has fallen from its $46 debut peak to roughly $5.   Trust the vault. Just don't expect the front desk to operate at the same standard.

Gemini was launched back in 2014 by the Winklevoss twins during a time when crypto exchanges were still wild west casinos with almost no regulation or security standards. On the positive side, Gemini has maintained a pretty clean security history. No major exchange wallet hacks till now, regulated custody infrastructure, SOC certifications. Liquidity is decent on majors like BTC and ETH, especially USD pairs.  But the downside is that Gemini often feels too much like a bank pretending to be a crypto exchange. Fees are relatively high, altcoin selection is limited and the platform is notorious on CT for strict compliance reviews, frozen withdrawals and slow support responses. While they claim full reserves and regular audits, Gemini still doesn’t offer a fully user-verifiable Proof of Reserves audit or a publicly visible emergency insurance fund for retail users. Then came the Gemini Earn program with Genesis. Even though Gemini itself wasn’t hacked, a lot of users got stuck in that mess and community trust took a massive hit. https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2023-7

Gemini has one of the cleanest and most beginner friendly UI/UX designs among US exchanges, especially for spot trading and passive investing users. The ActiveTrader interface is more advanced but still easier to understand than Bitfinex or HTX. Withdrawal and trading fees are widely criticized for being higher than other US based exchanges. Global adoption weakened after the Gemini Earn controversy, though the exchange still retains strong institutional recognition because of its New York regulatory status and Winklevoss branding. The Gemini team continues improving compliance systems and security infrastructure, but public sentiment increasingly focuses on support failures rather than innovation. Customer service is currently one of Gemini’s worst operational weaknesses, with widespread complaints about generic replies and unresolved tickets lasting weeks or months. https://www.reddit.com/r/Gemini/comments/1rrctf3/gemini_customer_service_stopped_responding/

I was actually surprised and disappointed by looking at all complaints across the space, and I'm afraid most of those claims are legit! https://www.trustpilot.com/review/gemini.com?stars=1 Gemini was built by the Winklevoss twins to be the ultimate "safe" harbor, operating under the heavy hand of New York regulators. But let me tell you, that regulatory safety comes at an insulting price for regular traders. Here is the harsh reality. If you use their basic spot (Active Trader) interface, they will charge you at crazy high base tier fees: 0.60% Maker and a staggering 1.20% Taker on spot! You are instantly deeply in the red the second you execute a trade. While they boast about never having a direct exchange hack, their "security" is actually their biggest weakness. I constantly scan Trustpilot, and it is a graveyard of frozen accounts. Their aggressively strict compliance measures actively block you from withdrawing your own money. Real users repeatedly report that basic identity verifications and manual "risk reviews" drag on for weeks. Your funds get held hostage while robotic support systems completely ignore your tickets. And we cannot ignore the Gemini Earn disaster. Yes, they finally managed to refund users after the Genesis bankruptcy dragged through the courts, but locking up retail funds for that long permanently destroyed their street credibility but finally they got it right https://www.reddit.com/r/Gemini/comments/1d3d588/gemini_earn_users_receive_218_billion_of_their/ Sum: Gemini is a heavily guarded, incredibly expensive vault. It is built for institutional whales who love filling out paperwork. But for the average crypto trader, the extortionate fees and constant threat of multi week withdrawal freezes make it a hard pass.

Gemini's one of the most buttoned-up CEXs out there, and no hacks/exploits ever reported recent market predictions blog (Bitcoin outperforming gold, CLARITY Act passing) keeps them visible without hype overload. heavy on support delays/verification gripes), fees sting compared to low-cost rivals, and derivatives limited in US/EU/UK, but for regulated, security-first trading it's hard to beat the cleanliness.

About Gemini

Year Established 2014
Country United States

CEO Tyler Winklevoss

Platform Background & Leadership

Founded 2014 by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. NYC headquarters. Operates under a New York Trust Company charter, one of the most heavily regulated US crypto platforms. 104 markets. Also operates GUSD stablecoin and credit card program.

Security Track Record

Never hacked directly. SOC 2 Type 2 certified. Majority cold storage.

However, Gemini Earn caused a major trust crisis. In November 2022, lending partner Genesis Global froze ~$900 million in Earn user funds after FTX's collapse. Prolonged legal battles with DCG followed. In February 2024, Gemini settled and returned ~97% of funds, with remaining distributions in early 2025.

Based on 8 community reviews, Gemini sits at an OG Score of 23.5. The exchange itself was never breached, but the Earn debacle was a devastating trust event. Widespread Trustpilot complaints about account freezes, slow support and verification delays add to the cautious assessment.

Gemini Fees & Fee Structure

Convenience interface: ~1.49% spread plus flat fees. ActiveTrader: 0.60% maker, 1.2% taker. Among the highest fees in the industry. Justified by regulatory status but painful for active traders.

Staking & Earn Products

Relaunched Gemini Staking on select PoS assets with restructured terms post-Genesis. Users should carefully evaluate counterparty risk given the Earn history.

Trading Experience & Platform Features

Basic app and ActiveTrader view. No margin, futures, or leverage. Strongest feature is regulatory clarity. For US users who prioritize operating within a fully regulated framework, Gemini provides that. The trade-off: highest fees, fewest features, smallest asset selection among major exchanges.
