AMPL flips the usual crypto model instead of the price changing while user's token count stays fixed user token count changes daily at 2 AM UTC to push the price back toward $1 while the total supply increases and decreases it launched in 2019 it's one of the earliest volatile supply tokens with no strong backing.
This is not a stablecoin despite it targets $1 price per token so not safe option to hold as long term saving and the token price extremely volatile swings alongside crypto market condition.
It's been delisted from only one exchange it was available to trade bitfinex so it now mostly be traded on Dex with higher slippage and low liquidity.

AMPL's biggest weakness is its token design itself. During prolonged periods below its target, holders can suffer both falling market value and shrinking token balances through negative rebases. That makes the asset difficult for ordinary users to understand and hold through volatility.
The rebase mechanism also creates serious DeFi integration friction. Protocols often need wrappers or custom infrastructure because balances change automatically.
Another concern is limited real-world adoption. After years of development, AMPL still hasn't become a widely used unit of account, which raises questions about whether its monetary design solves a problem users actually want solved.
Finally, the complexity itself is a risk. A monetary system that requires users to understand rebases, wrappers and elastic supply has a much higher adoption barrier than conventional stablecoins or fixed-supply assets.

AMPL is a simple algorithmic stablecoin launched in 2019 that tries to hover around $1 using daily “rebases.” Instead of changing your ownership share, the system adjusts your token balance up or down depending on demand. You still own the same percentage of the network, just with a shifting number of tokens in your wallet. Compared to something like UST, which collapsed in 2022 due to a complex mint-and-burn structure tied to LUNA, AMPL takes a much more stripped-down approach. No collateral loops, no secondary tokens, just a pure supply-adjustment mechanism. It has also managed to survive more than 7 years without any major hacks, which is rare in DeFi. That said, this is very much a “DeFi-native experiment” rather than a stable store of value. The pros are clear: it’s highly decentralized, avoids liquidation mechanics and plays a key role in powering the SPOT system in DeFi. But the trade-offs are just as real. The daily balance changes feel unintuitive for most users, trading volume is low, Oracle Price risks and in weak market conditions the price can drift away from the target value. On top of that, onchain liquidity remains limited and there are no listings on major centralized exchanges at this time. It’s also worth noting that their governance token, FORTH, was recently delisted from Binance. https://www.binance.com/en/support/announcement/detail/ddac99c0e5044c13a13c7c113e530e2b Good for DeFi fans who like experiments, but not for people who want a safe, boring $1 stablecoin.

The most glaring issue isn’t just the confusing tokenomics, it’s the Aave liquidity fiasco. Since late 2023, users have been completely unable to withdraw their AMPL from Aave v2 due to a massive contract failure. The Ampleforth team coded the custom integration, and it literally broke the pool, creating more “aTokens” than actual liquidity backing them, see it here: https://www.binance.com/fr-AF/square/post/6580318951666 While the DAO eventually funded 40% of a compensation package, this wasn't a hack, it was a design flaw by the devs that trapped user funds for months: https://forum.ampleforth.org/t/postmortem-for-aave-v2-ampl-liquidity-shortfall/749 And the team’s communication during the crisis was so vague and defensive that even the Aave mods threw their hands up. That is a monumental trust failure for a protocol claiming to be a building block of DeFi. See the team responses: https://governance.aave.com/t/ampl-problem-on-aave-v2-ethereum/15886/44?page=2

Out of all the projects I've followed, this has real staying power. It survives the chaos without drama and keeps that calm vibe alive. Swapping tokens feels painful lately but deep down the strength is what matters most.
