it is a custom network which was built to help corporations securely manage digital identities and private data without exposing information, Instead of typing in passwords or uploading physical passports on websites, Ontology built an encryption tool called ONT ID it allows users to safely verify who they are to third party applications while completely controlling their data, the ONT token is the primary staking and storage coin used to pay the network's processing fees, secure the chain via validation, and vote on upcoming rules.
To prevent system price crashes the project uses a smart dual token system staking the main ONT coin generates a secondary gas utility token called Ontology Gas to fuel network fees and transaction costs.
But unlike decentralized projects, the token didn't have a public ICO sale a huge portion of the fixed 1 Billion supply was allocated to the parent corporation Onchain and core builders, creating a heavily centralized internal control, also competition in the Web3 privacy and identity space is heavily crowded newer layer2 protocols and identity project like Worldcoin or Gitcoin Passport have completely taken over Ontology's early market dominance, keeping the ONT token heavily undervalued.

Ontology teams did a very nice work on the technology no doubt but it happens to get matured faster than its market adoption. Its decentralized identity framework, verifiable credentials, and privacy tools were built years before these concepts became mainstream discussion points in Web3. Rather than abandoning the project, the team has chosen to simplify its ecosystem, integrate multiple products into ONTO Wallet, and reposition the network around AI ready identity infrastructure. This is a logical strategic shift, but it also reflects an acknowledgement that the previous ecosystem structure struggled to achieve widespread traction.
The more important question is not whether Ontology has good technology cus I'd say it does but the real question is whether it can translate technical credibility into sustained user growth. Competing identity solutions are now emerging across larger ecosystems with stronger developer communities and network effects. If the ONTO Wallet becomes a genuinely useful identity and data platform rather than simply another wallet, the market may reassess Ontology's value. If not, the project risks remaining respected for its engineering while continuing to underperform in adoption and ecosystem expansion. ONT doesn’t feel like a leading project in any category. One recent thing that gave the token attention again was the EU eIDAS 2.0 digital identity discussion. Some traders pushed the idea that Ontology could benefit because of its identity focused infrastructure. That caused a temporary rally earlier in 2026…but to be honest outside those bursts the ecosystem activity still feels quiet. Another weakness people overlook is that ONT and ONG confuse many users. New users often don’t understand why two tokens exist, which one powers what or why value is split that weakens retail interest badly.
